The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) today welcomed the new Code of Conduct as a milestone in the rebuilding of Solomon Islands public service.
The Code, which provides a minimum standard of conduct and work performance for public officers, was launched this week by the Minister for Public Service, Hon Milner Tozaka.RAMSI Special Coordinator, Graeme Wilson, said the development of such a code was a major step forward in the effort to create a culture of good governance in Solomon Islands.
"Good conduct is at the heart of good governance," Mr Wilson said, "and good governance has been at the heart of the key goal of the Solomon Islands - RAMSI partnership of building a peaceful, prosperous and stable Solomon Islands."
Mr Wilson said he particularly wanted to congratulate Minister Tozaka, the Permanent Secretary, Mr Ishmael Avui and their team at the Ministry of Public Service for taking forward the rebuilding of the Solomon Islands public service with the launch of the code.
"I know a great deal of hard work and thought has gone into producing a Code that, while easy to follow, provides comprehensive guidelines to Solomon Islands public servants on how to conduct themselves in the workplace."
RAMSI was deployed to Solomon Islands in 2003 to restore law and order and help Solomon Islanders build a better, well-governed nation. RAMSI currently supports the Public Service Improvement Program which has been designed to run for ten years. The program is working with the Ministry of Public Service to help it strengthen the capacity and efficiency of the public service by focusing on developing its Human Resource Management.
