A crash in the early hours of 3 October 2026 at King George VI market left the driver of a car dead, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) said in a statement published on the Solomon Islands Government portal on 5 October 2026, adding that its National Traffic Department (NTD) is handling the investigation.
Police findings so far confirm that three people were inside a white Toyota Rav 4 that was moving at high speed and heading in an easterly direction, the statement said.
At the market's eastern end, according to the statement, the car struck the edge of the road and jumped, and one female passenger fell from the vehicle.
Director of the NTD, Superintendent William Foufaka, said that when the car came down it struck a pedestrian, breaking the man's left leg.
Mr Foufaka said those hurt were taken to the National Referral Hospital (NRH) for medical help, but the driver was pronounced dead.
The two remaining passengers are still being monitored by medical staff while traffic officers carry on with the investigation, Mr Foufaka said, adding that further information would be released later.
In the statement, police offered condolences to the family and friends of the person who died.
