British High Commissioner Paul Turner and the Governor of the Central Bank of Solomon Islands, Dr Luke Forau, launched the country's new 50 cent coin featuring the effigy of King Charles III on 1 October.

The British High Commission in Honiara said the coin is the second Solomon Islands coin in circulation to feature the King, following the $1 coin introduced in 2025.

According to the release, the new 50 cent coin was officially announced on 24 September but only comes into circulation in October.

Turner said it was an honour that the Solomon Islands $1 and 50 cent coins featured King Charles.

He said the coins showed the close historic relationship between Solomon Islands and the United Kingdom, a relationship that has lasted well over a century.

The high commissioner also said he was hopeful of a royal visit in 2028 to mark the 50th anniversary of Solomon Islands independence.

The release did not say how many of the new coins have been minted, what design appears on the reverse, or whether existing 50 cent coins will stay in circulation alongside them.

King Charles III is the head of state of Solomon Islands, which became independent in 1978.
