The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) is investigating the possible cause of the death of a 32-year-old man after he swam to rescue his girlfriend at the Henderson Beach, east of Honiara on 25 August 2019.

Provincial Criminal Investigation Officer, Guadalcanal Province Inspector Hughes Nevol says, “Information received so far by police say that the deceased and his girlfriend were consuming alcohol at the Henderson Beach on the night of 24 August when they started arguing with each other.”

“It is believed that the girl jumped into the sea with the alleged intension to commit suicide. The deceased, who was believed to be drunk at that time, jumped into the sea in an attempt to rescue the girl but then allegedly drowned. The girl survived the ordeal.”

Inspector Nevol adds: “The post mortem was done yesterday (27 August 2019) and will form part of the police investigation as part of a death inquiry file.”

“My condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased during this time of sorrow,” says Inspector Nevol.

RSIPF calls on young people who are in relationship not to resort to alcohol to resolve any issue that his affecting their relationship but to seek help from other close friends or relatives or even a marriage counsellor.
