The Australian Defence Force has presented new working uniforms to members of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Maritime Department and Explosive Ordnance Department, the Australian High Commission said.

Assistant Defence Advisor Squadron Leader Brett Verity handed the uniforms to RSIPF Maritime Director Nevol Soko and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Director Clifford Tanuki at a ceremony at Aola Wharf.

The high commission said the presentation recognised the contribution of both departments to the safety and security of Solomon Islands, and reflected Australia's support for the capability and professionalism of the RSIPF.

Maritime officers help safeguard the country's borders, work against transnational organised crime and disrupt activities such as drug trafficking and unregulated fishing, the high commission said.

Explosive ordnance officers locate and safely dispose of explosive remnants of war, a legacy of the Second World War that remains a threat in many parts of the country.

"A uniform represents professionalism, pride and a commitment to service," Squadron Leader Verity said.

Verity said the uniform stood for the responsibilities carried out each day by the men and women of the Maritime and Explosive Ordnance departments, often in difficult conditions and in support of the safety of their communities.

The Maritime Department was recognised at the ceremony for its work protecting Solomon Islands waters, supporting maritime operations and helping connect communities across the archipelago.

The Explosive Ordnance Department was acknowledged for its specialised expertise and its focus on safety. The high commission said the work of explosive ordnance specialists required courage, discipline and precision, and continued to protect lives and communities.

Speakers at the ceremony pointed to the partnership between Australia and Solomon Islands in supporting regional peace, stability and security, according to the release.

The Australian Defence Force said it valued the commitment shown by both departments and would continue its partnership with Solomon Islands in support of a safe and secure nation.
