The second round of Exercise Coastwatchers for 2026 has ended, with 173 Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) personnel completing training delivered through Australia's Defence Cooperation Program.
The Australian High Commission said the exercise, the second of three this year, included 22 courses across nine training categories.
According to the release, safety was a defining theme of this year's exercise. It included the qualification of additional Small Boats Instructors to strengthen maritime safety, and advanced medical training for provincial officers to improve emergency response.
A new Vehicle Maintainer Operator Course was also introduced, covering safe vehicle operation and preventative maintenance.
The High Commission said the courses reflect a shared commitment by Australia and Solomon Islands to equipping personnel with the skills and resources to operate safely in demanding environments.
Australian Defence Advisor, Royal Australian Navy Captain Emma Griffiths, spoke at the closing ceremony.
"At its core, the Defence Cooperation Program reflects our shared commitment to developing capability, enhancing professionalism, and supporting the ongoing advancement of our respective security institutions," Griffiths said.
She said the programme is a partnership based on mutual respect, trust and a common interest in contributing to the safety and security of both countries.
Two courses were run for the first time. The inaugural Administration Course covered organisational management and administration within the RSIPF, while the first Fitness Leaders Course trained personnel to maintain physical standards and promote health across the force.
Certificates of achievement were presented to the highest performing RSIPF members in each course. Griffiths said the certificates recognised the dedication, effort and professionalism shown by participants, and represented an investment in the continued development of the RSIPF and its personnel.
The High Commission said RSIPF leadership acknowledged the work of instructors, support staff and trainees, and thanked members of the Australian Defence Force for their support in developing the force.
Exercise Coastwatchers will return for its third and final round of 2026 in October. The release does not say where the courses were held or give the dates of the second round.
