Republic of China, Taiwan today extended its assistance to help the country meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) following the opening of a health training workshop in Honiara.

The training is being conducted by health specialists from Taiwan Health Center and Kaohsiung Medical University Nursing under a three year maternal and neonate plan.

Speaking at the opening ceremony at the National Referral Hospital, Director of Public Health Dr Tenneth Alipendava thanked the Taiwan government for their continuous assistance in the health sector.

Dr Alipendava says such tools will really help in the country's great challenge of meeting "some of MDGs, particularly 4 and 5, to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health by year 2015."

Taiwan's Professor Fan-Hao Chou says the training workshop should help to identify better ways to address poor health facilities in rural clinics, which should help improve the health of mothers and children.
