Solomon Islands World Taekwondo Union (SIWTU) are sending a team of three athletes and a coach to the World Taekwondo Oceania (WTO) competition in Tahiti – World ranking competition. The team travels today at 10:00 am.

SIWTU President Derrick Afu confirmed three events the athletes will participate in; the President Cup (G2 Ranking), 2022 Oceania Championship (G4 Ranking) and Tahiti Open (G2 Ranking).

“Performing at these events is important for our athletes. Their ranking points will be determined at the elite level of ranking – the world stage,” Afu said.

“These athletes can reach 70 per cent and can directly identify under Wild Card entry at international competitions like the Olympics.”

The President thanked the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS) for assisting them with their travel requirements and preparing the athletes and coaches with the High-Performance training in the buildup.

Female Taekwondo athlete, Jolyn Yu and male athletes, Fred Jr Gwali, Isaac Pat will be under the guidance of coach Junior Maetia at the regional competition.

Prior to their send-off today the team was trained and prepared by the SINIS Performance Service Team (PST) Portfolio 1 (Combat/Weight Sports). Some of the key areas covered include mental health skills, health service, nutrition and well-being and lifestyle pre-competition tips.

The team also got support and well-wishes from other sporting athletes before their departure.
