The proposal for the establishment of a Melanesian Regional Police Academy is amongst the agendas for discussion by the Melanesian Spearhead Group Leaders at their two-day meeting in Honiara later this week.

Director-General of the MSG Secretariat, Mr Amena Yauvoli told the MSG
Chair, during a briefing yesterday on MSG issues ahead of the two-day MSG
Leaders’ Summit commencing this Thursday, that the MSG Senior Officials
Meeting and Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Lautoka, Fiji, last month had
approved the proposal for endorsement by Leaders.

The Agreement establishing the Melanesian Regional Police Academy and
Framework Agreement for a Formed Police Unit was signed during the 20th
MSG Leaders’ Summit in Honiara last year.

MSG Member States’ Police Commissioners thereafter met in April this year in
Fiji and agreed on the implementation of Phase II of the Formed Police Unit
and Department of Peace Keeping Operations.

The Director-General said he signed a Memorandum of Understanding early
this month with the Government of Fiji to allow the secondment of a senior
police officer to the secretariat to work on firming up the implementation of
the Formed Police Unit.
