Police have confirmed that a dead body has been found at the Botanical garden area in Honiara this morning.

The Police media unit told SIBC news that members of the public living at the Botanical garden area close to SIWA's water pump found the dead body of a man, said to be in his early 40s.

Police say the body was found floating in a stream that runs through the botanical garden. Preliminary reports say the man was identified to have come from Choiseul province.

A police media officer says police are still investigating the cause of death, although foul play has not been ruled out as a likely cause.

The body has been taken to the Honiara National Referral Hospital for medical examination. Police are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that may assist in their investigation.

Meanwhile, Police say they will be focusing on driver and passenger safety over the coming weeks and to provide community messages on road and vehicle safety.

Last weekend, Police attended a fatal collision at Tandai highway in west Honiara which claimed the life of a young man.

A 21 year old man was also arrested and charged over a hit and run crash near the Ministry of Infrastructure Development last Saturday.

Police have arrested the suspect and charged him with careless driving.
