Single used plastic waste has become a critical issue in the Solomon Islands, with poor legal enforcement and other challenges.

Ban on Single Used Plastic in Progress

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Climate Change Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), Dr Melchior Mataki says a regulation to ban single used plastics in the country has already been approved by cabinet.
Prime Minister Sogavare pointed out, that had it not been for COVID-19 and the November Riots, the government would not look too kindly on the lack of progress.

Sogavare Expects Outstanding Bills by June

Prime Minister Hon. Manasseh Sogavare has instructed his officials in the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to follow up on outstanding Bills siting in the Legislative calendar dating back to 2019.
Since the opening of Volunteer applications on April 15th, more than 300 people have submitted their applications to GOC’s Workforce Centre at AJ City Mall Lunga, East Honiara.

Solomon Islands National University (SINU) yesterday celebrated its 10th anniversary, marking its tenth year since the then Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (SICHE) transitioned into the university it is today.

Work in Progress for New Rural Health Centres

Delivery of health services to the Provinces, especially to rural and remote parts of the country has always been challenging given the distance amongst the islands associated with high transportation costs, irregular shipping services to name a few.
Announced yesterday, the money - guided by the Tuia te Waka a Kiwa, New Zealand's international climate finance strategy - will go directly into the existing Solomon Islands Provincial Capacity Development Fund.

New Zealand Boosts Support for Climate Action

The New Zealand government has committed $15 million to support Solomon Islands provincial governments to strengthen climate resilience at the grassroots level.
This will be the first visit by any UK Foreign Secretary to the country making it a great opportunity for Solomon Islands to further explore and deepen the Solomon Islands-UK cooperation and to seek further bilateral assistance and support from the UK for its priority areas of development.

UK Foreign Secretary to Visit

The United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs will be visiting the Solomon Islands from the 19th- 20th April 2023.
