Tropical cyclone Maila wrecked around 1300 dwelling homes in Western and Choiseul Provinces in April, and the National Government intends to rebuild them through the National Disaster Council (NDC), the council said.
First assessments by Provincial Disaster Authorities put the number at approximately 1,300 homes destroyed and damaged, NDC chair and permanent secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology, David Hiba Hiriasia, said.
The Government has allocated SB$75 million for the work, Mr Hiriasia said. The money will sit in a National Disaster Special Fund, which the NDC manages with the Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MoFT), and is for families in the two provinces hit by the cyclone.
The recovery programme will start once MoFT gives final approval for the funding, Mr Hiriasia said. Planning for procurement has begun, and materials will then be sent to beneficiaries in the two provinces.
School buildings, health clinics and other infrastructure will also be rebuilt under the programme, but with further government and donor money, he said. The NDC said the GREAT coalition is behind the rebuilding and has given an assurance that the special disaster fund will be tightly controlled so it is used only for its purpose.
Mr Hiriasia told affected communities that the rebuilding will happen, and thanked them for waiting while the Government works to secure the money. He also thanked development partners for the funds they have given to the shelter recovery programme.
