The Inter-Primary School Mini Tennis Competition was officially opened yesterday at the Supreme Tennis Court.

The tennis competition is sponsored by the Solomon Islands ANZ bank.

Development Officer of Tennis, Mr. Benjamin Joel said that the competition is organized to prepare children to be selected for the Oceania Tennis Tournament which will be held at the end of 2008.

Solomon Times noticed that students from the Primary schools of Vura, Panatina, Burns Creek, Wood Ford International and Chung Wah were at the tennis court.

"There are other Primary schools that will take part in the event. There is a total of 13 schools," he added.

According to Mr. Joel, the competition will close on Thursday, and eight children from the tournament will be selected for further trainings.

Mr. Joel explained that after the selection of the eight competitors in Honiara, they will travel to Malaita this week to organize a similar tournament.

Solomon Times was informed that from both tournaments, they will only select ten children to participate in the Oceania Tournament.

Mr. Joel revealed that he enjoyed organizing such events as he wanted to motivate children, "because I believe in learning very young and by doing so, they would have the confidence when they go out for tournaments outside of the country."
