The Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau (SIVB) has challenged the country’s population to show pride in their nation by keeping the Solomon Islands clean.

The SIVB’s new ‘Green Team’, led by marketing manager Freda Unusi, started the nationwide drive last week by cleaning a badly blocked drain at the side of the SIVB headquarters, which had been left unattended since the April floods.

“From little things, big things grow and from this small beginning we just wanted to show our fellow countrymen that yes, there are times when we can take the responsibility ourselves,” Ms Unusi said.

“We need to determine our own future by looking after our environment and the time to start doing that is now. The SIVB Green Team is calling on all Solomon Islanders to follow our example and be passionate and proud about their country.”

SIVB CEO, Josefa Tuamoto echoed the call, saying that a clean country would make the Solomon Islands a more attractive prospect for international visitors.

“This isn’t just about marketing – it’s also in the way we care for the environment and more importantly, how we can leave a legacy that our children will be proud of,” Tuamoto said.
