A tsunami warning issued for Honiara and surrounding areas has been lifted.
The warning was issued following a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck Malango, Guadalcanal – located south west of Honiara.
The Solomon Islands Met Service lifted the warning 1.48pm this afternoon.
Despite the lifting of the tsunami warning the Met service is advising the public to remain cautious as aftershocks are likely to continue.
The Solomon Islands are a part of the ’Ring of Fire’ that surrounds the basin of the Pacific Ocean; earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic activity can occur at any time.
Sometimes localized tsunamis are caused by larger undersea earthquakes.
