Solomon Islands has secured USD 2.02 million (approximately SBD 16.4 million) from the Government of Italy for two projects covering climate-resilient infrastructure, renewable energy and sustainable agrifood systems, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade said.
The ministry said the funding was approved at the 19th Joint Committee meeting under the Cooperation Programme between Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) and Austria, Italy, Luxembourg and Spain, held at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations in New York on 20 October 2026. The two proposals were put to the committee by the Chargé d'Affaires and Deputy Permanent Representative of Solomon Islands to the United Nations, Ms Fiona Indu, and approved.
The larger share, USD 1,037,299, goes to climate-resilient infrastructure work at Su'umoli Wharf. That money will be channelled through the National Transport Fund, with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development carrying out the work.
The second project, SINERGY: Scaling Integrated Nature-based and Renewable Energy Solutions for Climate-Resilient Agrifood Systems in Solomon Islands, has been allocated USD 987,000 for nature-based solutions and renewable energy aimed at making agrifood systems more resilient. It will be implemented jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology.
Ms Indu thanked the Government of Italy for the money and acknowledged Austria, Luxembourg and Spain for their continued support for the development priorities of Pacific Island countries, the ministry said.
The Cooperation Programme links Pacific Small Island Developing States with the four European partners, and has run for 19 years, according to the ministry.
