The commemoration of the 'Commonwealth Day' was held yesterday morning at the Commonwealth Youth Program Center.

In his speech Prime Minister, Dr Derek Sikua, said that there is a very strong and important message behind the theme and the people should not underestimate it.
"This year's Commonwealth Day theme, 'The Environment - Our Future' is a very powerful one," said Dr. Sikua.

"The government therefore wish to acknowledge the various steps and strategies that the Commonwealth together with other sister organizations like the United Nations, have taken to address the threats posed by Environmental degradation."

Dr Derek Sikua stated that the Solomon Islands government is committed to working closely with other commonwealth countries to fight against climate change and collectively implement the "Lake Victoria Commonwealth Climate Change Action Plan' which, passed in Kampala, Uganda, last year."

During the occasion this morning, Dr Sikua expressed his gratitude and appreciation on be half of the government and people of Solomon Islands. "I acknowledge the Commonwealth Secretariat for its continuing contribution and support to our country's peace and development endeavors."

He said that his government will do its best to support the work of the CYP and fulfill the host country obligations.
