Officers from the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at Henderson Police Station are investigating the tragic death of a 9-year-old girl in a fire at the Tenaru Bridge area.
Chief Superintendent Rodney Kuma, Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Guadalcanal Province, stated, “The horrific incident occurred following an argument between the girl's parents.”
According to PPC Kuma, it is alleged that the father poured petrol over their home using a 1.5-liter bottle, which ignited the blaze. The father, mother, and their 5-year-old son managed to escape with injuries, but tragically, the young girl was unable to flee the flames.
Police officers promptly responded to the scene and transported the injured family members to the National Referral Hospital (NRH), where they are currently receiving treatment.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the immediate family, relatives, and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” PPC Kuma expressed.
He further explained that the family resided in a house near the road where they also stored petrol and other products for sale.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging any witnesses who were present during the incident to come forward and provide information to assist in the inquiry.
