Lata police are investigating after the body of a man in his 30s was found on 12 September on the beach at Bamoi village, on Santa Cruz Island in Temotu Province, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force said in a statement published on the Solomon Islands Government portal on 15 September.

Police said the deceased had been identified as Mathew Mayio of the Vanikoro Islands.

Supervising Provincial Police Commander for Temotu Province, Inspector Walter Leleina, said the cause of death had not yet been determined and that the matter was being treated as a suspected murder while the investigation continued.

Inspector Leleina appealed to residents of Santa Cruz Island, and particularly those at Bamoi village, to come forward. "I appeal to the people of Santa Cruz Island, more especially those at Bamoi village, to assist police with information on this incident to bring those who are involved before the court," he said.

Inspector Leleina also offered condolences on behalf of the RSIPF to the friends and immediate family of the deceased, according to the statement.
