The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force has announced the setup its new Family Violence Unit.

This follows the police Executive's approval for three full-time positions to help tackle domestic violence issues.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Edmund Sikua said that the new Family Violence Unit will work closely with trained Provincial Coordinators based in the Provinces.

The unit will also work with the police RSIPF Sexual Assault Unit under the management of the National Criminal Investigation Division.

Mr Sikua says the unit's role will be to implement the police's Family Violence Policy and roll-out updated investigative and reporting processes across the force.

He says the police's Family Violence Unit will also work with the Gender Based Violence Referral Network agencies including the Ministry of Health and Medical services, Christian Care Centre, Family Support Centre and Social Welfare Department.
