Police are investigating an incident in which a foreign national escaped deportation with the help of knife wielding locals.

A Sri Lankan national, believed to be working at the Taj Mahal restaurant, was on Monday escorted by the police to the Honiara International Airport to be deported from the country as he was illegally residing in the country without a proper permit, when he escaped.

It was reported that a group of men armed with knives and other weapons charged into the departure lounge, threatening police and security officers before escaping with the foreign national in a waiting vehicle.

SIBC News understands that security at the Honiara International Airport has since been boosted with the increased presence of RAMSI, PPF and RSIPF personnel.

Police Media Unit also confirms that more details of the investigation and the incident will be released today during the Police Commissioner's weekly press conference with the local media.
