A team of electoral observers representing the Pacific Islands Forum is to observe the Solomons election next week.

The Forum team includes John Kalamoroh, the deputy electoral commissioner in Papua New Guinea, Losaline Teo from the Tuvalu government and Forum secretariat staff.

The Forum Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor, said the poll is pivotal for Solomon Islands, as the first election since the departure of the Regional Assistance Mission.

She said it is her hope this election will reflect the continued commitment by the Solomon Islands government, its agencies, and by all those campaigning, to good governance and the rule of law.

The Pacific Forum joins a number of international election observers currently in the country.

The key role of international election observation is assess whether an election is in line with international standards, highlight specific recommendations for improvement, and demonstrate the support of the international community for genuine democratic elections.

Where deserved, international election observation can also promote public confidence in an election.
