The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service says there is no tsunami threat after a 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit Malango on Guadalcanal, approximately 27 kilometres west - southwest of Honiara.

The undersea earthquake occurred at 11:21am early this morning near Latitude 9.58 Degrees South, Longitude 159.73 Degrees East.

This is near Malango, where a 7.0 earthquake struck in November 2022.

The tremor cut power to some areas of the capital and disrupted radio transmissions by the state broadcaster, but the government said there was no major damage to buildings in the capital.

This is still fresh in the minds of Honiara residents, and today’s tremor was a reminder of how active the ring of fire is.
