World Environment Day celebration in Honiara marks the first of its kind.

This morning's occasion began with ceremonial hosts from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Meteorology marching to the Cultural Village where the main programs took place.

Speaking at the opening of the ceremony, the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Meteorology, Honorable Gordon Darcy Lilo said that millions of people around the globe are celebrating the day.

He said the occasion is the United Nations flagship on environmental event, celebrated annually on 5th of June.

Mr. Lilo said that although World Environment Day had existed for 36 years, "this is the first time for our country to celebrate the day."

He called on everyone to collaborate to make a better environment for a better future.

Mr. Lilo urged for the country as a whole to be empowered and be active agents for sustainable and equitable development of Solomon Islands.
