The government of the Republic of China has released its first payment of 10 million dollars to support the 2011 Solomon Islands Government Training and Award.

The Taiwan Ambassador to Solomon Islands, His Excellency, Roy Wu, yesretday handed the payment to the Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Hon. Danny Philip.

Speaking during the occasion, Ambassador Wu assured the Prime Minister that the Taiwan Government will continue to support and fund the overseas scholarship program.

The money will go towards assisting the Government in supporting more than 700 Solomon Islands students to undertake various study programs at universities and institutions in the Pacific, including SICHE and the USP center in Honiara for their tuition fees and other allowances.

Ambassador Wu said education is the basic of economic growth for nation building. He encouraged students to study hard and return home to serve the country and its people after completing their study.

Prime Minister Philip in return thanked Ambassador Wu and the Government of Taiwan for the assistance to the Solomon Islands Government in the tertiary education sector.

He said Taiwan's continuing assistance to the education sector was the foundation for the Government to build its capacity of human resources for the country's sustainable development.

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister urged students to work hard in their studies so they can help the country.
