Solomon Water has advised its customers to boil their water before food preparation or consumption.

The advice comes after heavy rainfall over the past few days affecting inland water sources in Honiara.

This precautionary boil water notice is effective until further notice. Customers are also advised to observe the following precautionary measure.

• Allow water to run until it clears before filling up water for consumption.
• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
• Water used for bathing does not need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested.

Contaminated water can cause many types of diarrheal diseases, including Cholera, and other serious illnesses such as Guinea worm disease, Typhoid, and Dysentery. Water related diseases cause 3.4 million deaths each year.
