Solomon Islands Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has highlighted the importance of building a strong private sector relationship between Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea (PNG).

In a brief courtesy call to his office by the PNG trade minister Richard Maru yesterday, Mr Lilo said it is important for the Solomon Islands to look to its Melanesian brothers like PNG to increase the dimension of trade.

“It is vital that there is quality engagement in trade and investment for development between Solomon Islands and PNG,” he said.

Prime Minister Lilo said geographically and historically Solomon Islands share a very close and unique relationship with PNG.

Mr Lilo also conveyed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and the people of PNG for their continuous support and seriousness in helping the development of Solomon Islands through trade and investment.

In response, PNG’s trade minister Richard Maru thanked Prime Minister Lilo and his Government for welcoming them into the country.

Mr Maru said the high-profile delegation he led to Honiara shows PNG’s seriousness in helping the Solomon Islands.

He said the PNG is also looking into involving labour mobility in future where skilled Solomon Islanders will have the opportunity to work in PNG.

Prime Minister Lilo was also presented with a gift from the visitors in which he welcomed them also with a traditional necklace.
