The Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre (BUHC) will move to full 24/7 operations from 6 October, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services said in a statement published on the Solomon Islands Government portal on 29 September.
The ministry described the centre as a facility offering services that run from routine outpatient consultations through to maternal and newborn care. From 6 October, it said, the general outpatient department will provide primary medical care continuously, seven days a week.
Birthing services for low-risk expectant mothers will also operate without interruption from that date, according to the statement. The ministry said midwives and nursing staff would assess expectant mothers during routine antenatal care and advise them on a delivery plan, while cases classed as high-risk would continue to be referred to the National Referral Hospital (NRH).
Specialised outpatient clinics will run Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, the ministry said, with antenatal care on Monday and Wednesday, postnatal care and family planning on Tuesday, and child welfare services on Thursday and Friday.
Dental services, laboratory work, diagnostic imaging using X-ray and ultrasound, and pharmaceutical services will be available from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, the ministry said, with technical staff on call for emergencies outside those hours.
According to the statement, the longer opening hours give Honiara residents another option for basic health care, and dealing with non-emergency conditions at community level allows specialist teams at the National Referral Hospital to concentrate on critical and emergency cases.
