Hon. Patteson John Oti, the Speaker of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands, has launched the Members of Parliament Guide Book, marking a significant milestone for the Legislative institution over which Speaker Oti presides.

In addressing members of the current 12th Parliament and distinguished guests, Speaker Oti emphasized the longstanding aspiration of the National Parliament to provide comprehensive guidance to its members.

He highlighted the crucial role of this guide book as a support mechanism, designed to furnish both new and experienced parliamentarians with the necessary institutional insights and professional development resources.

Speaker Oti affirmed his commitment to facilitating briefings, arranged by the Acting Clerk, to enhance the invaluable information summarized within the guide book. These briefings are planned to empower new members in navigating the operation of the Standing Orders and Parliamentary law and practice in the Solomon Islands.

Hon. Rod Roberts, MLC, Deputy President of the Legislative Council of NSW, echoed Speaker Oti's sentiments, urging members of the 12th Parliament to regard the Members Guide Book as their essential reference, akin to a "bible" in their legislative journey. He further pledged continued support from the New South Wales Parliament towards the development activities of the Solomon Islands Parliament and its members.

Speaker Oti extended his heartfelt appreciation to the Office of the Clerk, contributing writers, and editorial contributors from the New South Wales Parliament for their invaluable contributions towards this initiative.

Additionally, he acknowledged the crucial role played by the UNDP under the Pacific Parliamentary Development Program in ensuring the fruition of this Members guide book. With the formal declaration by Speaker Oti on June 13, 2024, the Members Guide for the National Parliament of Solomon Islands is officially launched.
This guide book hopes to serve as a tool for all Members of Parliament to understand how Parliament functions and effectively discharge their duties as legislators.

The launch event, graced by the presence of dignitaries including Hon. Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, Members of the 12thParliament, Hon. Rod Roberts, MLC. Deputy President of the Legislative Council of NSW, Hon. Sonia Hornery, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales and Member for Wallsend, Mr. David Blunt, Clerk of the Parliaments and Clerk of the Legislative Council NSW, Mr. Simon Johnston, Clerk-Assistant, House and Procedure Legislative Assembly of NSW, Ms. Eline Saleuesile, Senior Parliamentary Officer. Legislative Assembly of NSW, Lord Bruce and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) Officials marked a significant step forward in enhancing parliamentary governance and capacity-building within the Solomon Islands.
