Acting Prime Minister Hon. Manasseh Maelanga today announced a major Government initiative to sponsor students studying at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) this year.

The initiative is part of government’s contribution towards students currently enrolled at SINU. This means students enrolled this year will no longer pay for tuition and other fees.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development has been tasked to oversee this process and to ensure funds for this initiative are forthcoming in this year’s supplementary budget.

Mr Maelanga said this commitment is aimed at ensuring locals fully utilize opportunities offered at SINU and most importantly to reduce the cost of tertiary education on families.

He added that the demand for tertiary education in Solomon Islands is huge and it is important that Government leads the way in assisting students pursue their educational interests.

Following this sponsorship arrangement, Government scholarships will be made available for students who are keen to undertake tertiary education at SINU starting next year.
