"The needs and rights of women and girls are a key priority in our response to the recent civil unrest," the Australian High Commission said.

Yesterday, acting High Commissioner, Sally-Anne Vincent and colleagues from AFP, ADF and RSIPF met with the Solomon Island National Council of Women to discuss how considerations of women, peace and security were factored into the recent deployment of Australian personnel.

"As a close friend, neighbour and partner to Solomon Islands, we will always support our Pacific Family in the face of challenges," the statement said.

Studies conducted by UNICEF show that in times of economic uncertainty, civil unrest and disaster there are myriad of risk factors that often lead to increased violence against women and children (VAW/C).
