Social media and unfounded rumours certainly had a role to play in the shutting down of Saint Nicholas College yesterday.

The principal of Saint Nicholas College James Lengi said pressure and rumours peddled by certain individuals on social media forced the school to shut down.

"The suspected case, who is currently in isolation, is not a student at the school, her sister attends the school, so there were concerns raised by parents, and others through social media," said the school principal.

Mr Lengi announced to students and staff yesterday that after a brief meeting with the school committee they decided to cancel classes.

Mr Lengi says the school administration will await further clarification from the Ministry of Health regarding the status of the lady in question before they decide on what to do next.

"We will resume school activities and classes once that happens, so that will determine whether we continue with our normal academic year program or we stop all school programs, that depends on Ministry’s advice,” Mr Lengi said.

He said despite yesterday’s scare the school is working hard to ensure that there are arrangements for the student in question to sit her Form 7 exams.
