The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) says it needs more time to complete its mandate.

Closing its thematic hearing for youths and women yesterday TRC's chairman Father Sam Ata says given the current situation, there is still more work to be done in the process of healing.

He said the commission had initially been given 12 months to investigate the massive and complex conflict situation, "which would require more than 12 months."

Chairman Father Sam Ata calls on the government, churches and civil society to respond with dignity and in a disciplined and sensitive attitude towards the situation.

"When people act together decisively with discipline and determination, nothing can stop us to achieve peace."

Speaking earlier on this week Minister of National Unity Reconciliation and Peace Hon. Hypolite Tarimae stated that a request for an extension by the commission will be reviewed and presented to Cabinet soon.

It is also understood that the opposition has supported the request for an extension by the TRC.
