The Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project (UWSSSP) is a monumental initiative poised to reshape the landscape of urban and peri-urban areas in the Solomon Islands.

With support from the European Union (EU), Global Environment Facility (GEF), World Bank, Solomon Water, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), this project is delivering sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient water and sanitation services to communities within Honiara.

The European Union has contributed a significant EUR 18 million to the project, emphasizing the global commitment to improving the quality of life in the Pacific Islands.

This major infrastructure development is set to increase water access for communities in the capital, where water shortages have been a recurring challenge.

These efforts will have a profound impact on reducing waterborne diseases and improving public health.

In a region highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, the UWSSSP’s focus on resilience is vital.

The project incorporates climate-adaptive measures, ensuring that the new water supply and sanitation systems can withstand extreme weather events and long-term environmental shifts.

This is essential for the sustainability of the infrastructure and the long-term security of water access in urban areas.

The construction of the Titinge reservoir is just one piece of the puzzle, but it represents the tangible progress being made to secure a brighter, cleaner tomorrow for the Solomon Islands.
