The Ambassador of the Republic of China (ROC), Taiwan, HE George Chan had formally released the first payment of SB$10 million for the '2010 Rural Constituency Development Fund (RCDF)' covering 50 constituencies in Honiara yesterday afternoon.

Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua formally received documents of the payment at a brief handover ceremony at the Prime Minister's Office.

Ambassador Chan said Taiwan fully supported the Solomon Islands Government in implementing its rural advancement policy.

"The fund will be contributing enormously to the alleviation of poverty and improvements in quality of life for rural people," Mr Chan said.

He also urges those responsible for managing the fund, especially members of parliament to assist their rural constituents without bias.

Prime Minister Sikua said the payment will enable MPs to proceed with the implementation of their 2010 constituency programs and projects.

"ROC's support will continue to have a direct impact on the livelihoods of rural people and communities and the Members of Parliament are committed to ensuring that the fund be utilized in the most effective and efficient manner and in accordance with the development needs of their constituencies," Dr Sikua said.

Acknowledging Taiwan's continuous assistance, Dr Sikua said Solomon Islands is committed to work closely with Taiwan to serve the interests and needs of the two countries.
