The Taro Police have successfully hosted a week-long court circuit at the Taro Police Station, with the Principal Magistrate from Honiara Central Magistrates’ Court presiding over the proceedings.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Choiseul Province, Superintendent Berry Pogesopa, shared that a total of 32 new cases and 14 ongoing cases from previous court sessions were listed for hearing.
“The court hearing was successful, with 32 defendants convicted and sentenced. The sentences included bound over orders, suspended sentences, fines, and imprisonment terms,” PPC Pogesopa reported. Fines amounting to $14,800 were collected during the court session.
Eight defendants are currently serving prison sentences ranging from four to ten months for offenses including assaulting police officers, house break-ins, and the indecent assault of underage girls.
Additionally, seven cases were discharged, while two were committed to the High Court for further hearings. Some cases were withdrawn or dismissed due to time limitations or insufficient evidence.
PPC Pogesopa expressed his gratitude for the support of various stakeholders, including the Choiseul Provincial Government, which allowed the Provincial Chamber to be used as a court venue. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to ensure the success of future court circuits and to address law and order issues in Choiseul Province.
"I want to acknowledge all those who supported the police in making this court circuit a success. Let’s continue working together to uphold law and order in Choiseul Province,” added Superintendent Pogesopa.
