Soon after the government severed ties with Taiwan Solomon Islands students studying in Taiwan have been told to return.

Upwards of 100 Solomon Islands students are studying at various tertiary institutions in Taiwan.

Sources say that notifications advising suspension of sponsorships were given to various universities where Solomon Islanders are currently studying. The Solomon Islands embassy in Taiwan is liaising closely with the Ministry of Education to coordinate the return of these students.

It is understood the first lot of students are expected back in country over the weekend or early next week.

Chairman of the Bipartisan Taskforce Hon. John Moffat Fugui told listeners of SIBC's talk back show over the weekend that students returning from Taiwan will be given full scholarships.

"Beijing has assured that if the diplomatic switch is made, surely they are ready to transfer the students from Taiwan to China with their full scholarship requirements,” he said
