The status of Solomon Islanders in Christchurch, New Zealand, following Tuesday's devastating earthquake is not yet known.

The 6.3 earthquake rocked Christchurch at around half past eleven on Tuesday morning.

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade says because the country has no official representative on the ground in Christchurch, there is "very little information at the moment regarding Solomon Islands citizens living in Christchurch."

The official says concerned relatives of Solomon Islanders living in Christchurch can call a toll free line 647802199 or visit the New Zealand Defence website www.army.mil.nz for more information.
