Solomon Telekom Company Limited, in collaboration with its US supplier WGI Telecom, has made a generous contribution to enhance women's healthcare services at the National Referral Hospital (NRH).
On March 1st, a handheld ultrasound device, specifically designed to support obstetric care, was donated to NRH with the aim of improving women's health service delivery.
Dr. Benjamin Koete, a consultant obstetrician at Honiara NRH, expressed gratitude for the timely and crucial donation, highlighting its potential impact on ward procedures and upcoming provincial outreaches.
The addition of this ultrasound device is expected to play a significant role in guiding the diagnosis and management of female patients, providing valuable support to healthcare professionals.
Dr. George Malefoasi, NRH Chief Executive Officer, extended his thanks to Ms. Christina Lasaqa, CEO of Solomon Telekom, and Mr. Winston Reid from the US supplier for their contribution of the useful medical equipment. Dr. Malefoasi emphasized the hospital's intention to procure more ultrasounds for the busy obstetrics department, and this gift opens the possibility of incorporating additional portable units.
The handheld ultrasound, measuring just over a foot long, has the capability to connect with phones or laptops for visualizing scans. This facilitates diagnosis, provides guidance for medical procedures, and aids in patient treatment.
Last year, NRH recorded a significant number of female admissions to obstetric and gynecological wards, totaling 9,854, with an additional 8,300 women seen through day clinics.
Dr. Malefoasi acknowledged the critical role that women's health plays at NRH, highlighting that Solomon Telekom's commitment to continued support in this vital area is greatly appreciated.
Mr. Winston Reid, representing WGI Telecom, expressed delight in directly contributing to advanced women's care through the ultrasound donation. An online training program is currently being coordinated between US obstetricians and the medical team in the Solomon Islands to ensure the optimal application of the mobile scanner in healthcare practices.
