Students from Woodford International School have been selected to represent Solomon Islands in the 2019 First Global Robotics Competition in Dubai.

The First Global Challenge is a truly international robotics event with more than 175 nations across the world traveling to Dubai to participate.

Participating teams are composed of students – aged 14 through 18 years – with the common goal of increasing their knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) so that they can become the next generation of scientific leaders who will work together to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems, from food security and access to clean water, to finding better medicines and securing cyberspace.

The First Global Challenge invites each country to send a team to compete in the robotics olympics, which takes place in a different nation each year.

Themed around the greatest challenges facing our planet, including the 14 Grand Challenges of Engineering identified by National Academy of Engineering, each year a different challenge takes center stage in an effort to foster understanding and cooperation among the youth of the world as they use their abilities to solve the world’s problems.

The challenges we face as a global society need to be solved, and the next generation can meet the task — together.

The Challenge will take place from October 24-27 at the Coca-Cola Arena, Dubai
.
The theme for 2019 is “Ocean Oppertunities”. Every year millions of tons of pollutants, generated by human activity, make their way into the world’s oceans, negatively affecting marine life and global populations.

The 2019 First Global Challenge brings attention to this critical issue in order to educate ourselves and take action to preserve our oceans and wildlife. This year teams will learn about real-world challenges related to cleaning up the world’s oceans.

In Ocean Opportunities, two competing alliances, each comprised of three teams from different nations, work to clear the ocean of pollutants.

Team Solomon Islands is being Mentored and Trained by Mr Rakesh Pandey and include six motivated and aspiring participants:

  • Catherine Mary Paulsen
  • Cyprian Nerau Tongi
  • Ethan Troy Lunga
  • Lisa Wu
  • Val-Christian Robert Kaspar
  • Wilton Teisia Poznanski
