A two-day workshop on ‘Athletic Solomons Foundation Coaches Course’ was successfully completed this week Monday and Tuesday at Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS).

Athletic Solomons (AS) collaborating with SINIS Performance Service staff, Sports Training and Education Program delivering the course involving both theory and practical learning certified participants with ‘High Performance Athletics Foundation Coaches Course’ certificates.

The 13 participants in total ranged from school teachers, current sport coaches, former athletes as well as certified coaches level 1 and even 2.

A veteran in athletics James Iroga facilitated the theory session as well as practical session with co facilitators Paul Korinihona and Vincent Calvo Haga who led the practical sessions.

Oceania Athletics Executive Director Yvonne Mullins and Competition Manager Tom O’Shaughnessy made an appearance and were present in the certificate ceremony. The two delegates who were on a technical visit to the country came in time to witness the course.

Executive Director Yvonne Mullins in her closing remarks highlighted the need for more women coaches in Athletics while acknowledging former athlete and current coach Ms Jenny Kenni as the only female participant in the current course.

This was a fair call by the Executive Director for ‘Fair Play’ in women’s opportunities as coaches overall, said Ms Zinnia Leamana, SINIS Coach Developer and Course Coordinator for the two day-course.

To add, Ms Mullins emphasized the importance of ‘Athletics Foundation Coaches Course’, as Certified Coaches need to renew coach licenses and certificates to keep current with ‘World Athletics Standards’.

All participants have shared similar sentiments towards the support for coaches that SINIS offers for Athletics Federation and are looking forward to engage in future courses that will align with World Athletics and Oceania Athletics.

Local athletic coach Mr Stanley Angisi who was part of the two-day activity expressed appreciation for attending the course.

“A big thank you to SINIS for doing a great job, never before had we had such presentations too in terms of professionalism. SINIS is doing a lot of promotion and it is really helpful for the coaches and athletes."
