The country has registered one additional Covid-19 case.

This was revealed by the Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare during his first nationwide address for 2022 over the national broadcaster (SIBC) on Friday 7th January.

“In my special address on the 29th December 2021, I informed you that we have now registered 24 cases of Covid-19 in the country following the identification of four new cases of Covid-19 in our quarantine centers – 3 from passengers returning from Fiji and one from a passenger returning from Dubai via Brisbane.

“All four cases are returning citizens. They have all been transferred to the Central Field Hospital,” the PM said.

The PM said that his office was informed by the Ministry of Health that the country now has a 5th positive case, who is the sister of the young boy that came from Fiji.

“The girl has been in isolation with her parents and brother who already tested positive for Covid-19 and therefore does not constitute any risk to the public,” Mr Sogavare said.

He reiterated that with this confirmation from the Ministry of Health, our official figure of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in the country now stands at 25.

The PM further informed the public that many of the passengers that travelled on both the Fiji and Brisbane flights have had their quarantine periods extended following contact tracing that identified they had been exposed to the original four cases.

He mentioned that their 14 days quarantine re-commenced on the last day of exposure to the positive cases.

The PM further revealed that in the past two weeks, 191 people arrived in the country by air.

In the same period, 285 people graduated from the quarantine stations after fulfilling their required quarantine days and Covid-19 tests.

“We have 113 people remaining in quarantine and they will be released in the coming week if they complete their testing requirements,” Mr Sogavare stated.
