Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Officers in Lata arrested one of the candidates in the recent provincial election in Temotu Province 14 June 2019.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Temotu Province, Superintendent James Toaki explains: “It is alleged that on Wednesday 12 June 2019, a vehicle was returning home from Lata after dropping off election officials from Nemba and Manoputi areas when the suspect allegedly used a crowbar to spear the vehicle and landed on the side of the trailer.

"He allegedly made other verbal threats including cutting down trees and blocking the road from Lata Station to the Manoputi area.”

“The incident was reported to police at Lata Police Station and the suspect was arrested and is currently in police custody while investigation into the alleged incident continues,” says PPC Toaki.

“I want to appeal to candidates in the recent Temotu Provincial Assembly election to accept whatever the outcome of the polling and work together with whoever has been elected for the good of our communities.”

“There are legal processes in place if a candidate is not happy with the provincial assembly election result but not to resort to taking the law into your own hands,” says PPC Toaki

He adds: “Police will not tolerate any one taking the law into their own hands. I urge members of the public to report any incidences during the recent provincial assembly election so we can investigate and bring the matter to the Court.”

“Let us join hands and fight against crime to ensure that Temotu Province is a safe, secure and peaceful place to live and enjoy.”
