Health and Medical Services Minister Clay Forau told Parliament that the leading cause of death in Solomon Islands is cancer, followed by diabetes.

Parliament was informed the "figure is quite alarming", with a lot of people with diabetes at the early stage not being aware that they have diabetes. Mr. Forau informed Parliament there are increasing complications of diabetes which affects a person head to toe.

He said diabetes can cause strokes, blindness, heart attacks, kidney problems and eventually end up with amputated limbs.

Mr. Forau stressed on the seriousness of diabetes, stating it is a health concern people of Solomon Islands should do something about by improving their diet with constant physical activities.
