The Pelau telecommunications tower, built under the Solomon Islands-Australia Partnership, is now officially online, delivering reliable 3G and 4G connectivity to the Malaita Outer Islands.
This marks the culmination of a significant telecommunications expansion project aimed at connecting some of the most remote communities in the Solomon Islands.
The project, which has brought six new towers to remote areas across the country, includes sites in Vavede (Choiseul Province), Kia (Isabel Province), Pelau (Malaita Province), and three sites in Western Province — Kariki, Kamalei, and Nila.
Each tower has been equipped with advanced Ericsson mobile communications technology and is supported by hybrid solar and diesel generators, ensuring uninterrupted access to communication services.
As the Solomon Islands’ closest telecommunications partner, Australia played a vital role in delivering these new facilities, paving the way for expanded social and economic opportunities in these regions. The connectivity boost is set to transform access to education, healthcare, and business opportunities, enhancing quality of life for many.
Australia’s continued support under the Solomon Islands-Australia Partnership underscores a commitment to fostering sustainable growth in the Solomon Islands. "No matter where you live, we are building better, together,” affirmed a spokesperson, underscoring Australia’s role in supporting development across all regions.
These new telecommunications resources signal a substantial step forward in closing the digital divide and improving connectivity for thousands in the Solomon Islands’ remote communities.
