The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service at 12:20am this morning on Wednesday 21st August 2019 issued a no tsunami statement following a 6.0 magnitude earthquake.

A locally-felt earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred at 12:03am this morning near Latitude 11.4 Degrees South, Longitude 166.3 Degrees East.

This is approximately 24 km SSW of Utupua island in Temotu province. There are also no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The MET service says that no further updates will be issued unless the situation changes.

The Solomon Islands lies in one of the world's most active seismic areas, exceeded only by Japan.
