After much speculation and anticipation the new Police Commissioner has been named. He is Mr Peter Aoranisaka from Marau Sound in East Guadalcanal.

Mr. Aoranisaka has been with the Royal Solomon Islands Police force (RSIPF) for more than 34 years, serving in various senior capacities in the past 12 years. He is currently the Assistant Commissioner responsible for Honiara City.

Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo announced this on Friday night, after cabinet endorsed the appointment late on Friday.

The endorsement was based on the recommendation of the Police and Correctional Services Commission.

The Commissioner of Police is charged with the overall administrative management of the police force under the established standing orders. Consequently, the Commissioner reports directly to the Prime Minister and is also a member of the national security council chaired by the Prime Minister.

Under the Commissioner of Police are several formation commanders who control the various arms of the Police Force such as the General Service Unit, the Crimimal Invesitations Department and Police Operations.
