The ongoing construction of the 3-million litre reservoir at Titinge represents a significant advancement in the Honiara Water Reservoirs Storage Project, a crucial component of Solomon Water's Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project (UWSSSP).
With the completion of the first one-third of the steel-reinforced concrete base slab, the project is set to continue over the next 12 months.
Project Manager Adam Winter underscores the importance of completing the concrete structure, emphasizing that it symbolizes the dedication of the project team. He also highlights the reservoirs' vital role in supporting the expanding water distribution network, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when water disruptions are more likely.
Upon completion, the Titinge tank will play a key role in mitigating water disruptions and fortifying the overall water supply infrastructure in the region. Solomon Water CEO Carmine Piantedosi stresses the project's significance in addressing challenges at the Kongulai source pump station, especially during heavy rainfall.
The new reservoirs are expected to enhance water security, aligning with Solomon Water's commitment to delivering a reliable water supply to the community.
Piantedosi also underscores the project's environmental sustainability benefits, as the new, large-capacity reservoirs will support water storage during dry periods.
Funding for the Honiara Water Reservoirs Storage Project is provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank (WB), and the European Union (EU).
In addition to the Titinge reservoir, the project encompasses the construction and commissioning of two additional concrete water reservoirs of similar size within Honiara, further bolstering the water infrastructure in the region.
