The communities of Afio and Anololo in Malaita are calling for urgent police intervention as the issues of kwaso (homebrew) and marijuana continue to escalate.

The rising prevalence of these substances has led to an increase in anti-social behavior and crime, prompting local leaders to seek stronger support from law enforcement.

In response to these concerns, the Auki police conducted an awareness campaign in both communities.

The initiative, led by the Provincial Police Commander (PPC) of Malaita Province, Chief Superintendent Tex Tafoa, aimed to address the situation and to reinvigorate the community-established Crime Prevention Committees (CPCs), which had become less effective in recent times.

Chief Superintendent Tafoa stated, “On the 24th of August 2024, the Auki community policing team travelled to Afio and Anololo to strengthen and empower the CPCs to resume their vital work.”

The team held an awareness session at Afio on Saturday, August 24th, followed by a similar session in Anololo on Sunday, August 25th.

The police presence was well-received by community members, with leaders expressing their appreciation for the engagement. "The re-visitation by the police brings hope to our communities and boosts public confidence," said community leader Mr. Javin Rukia. He emphasized the importance of a strong relationship between the police and the community, calling it the key to achieving peace and unity in Malaita Province.

Mr. Rukia also commended PPC Tafoa and his team for their commitment, noting that their efforts continued despite the challenges posed by poor road conditions. The police have urged other surrounding communities to collaborate closely with law enforcement, despite the difficulties faced.

As the issue of kwaso and marijuana intensifies, the partnership between the police and the community is seen as essential in restoring order and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in Central Kwara’ae.
