The Solomon Islands Leadership Code Commission last week imposed penalties of one-hundred dollars each on members of three Provincial Assemblies.

The Leadership Code Commission imposed penalties on 38 members of three Provincial Assemblies following failure by the leaders to declare their financial interests to the Commission within the given time under the Leadership Code Act.

These include 27 members of the Malaita Provincial Assembly, 6 from the Central Islands Provincial Assembly and 5 from the Isabel Provincial Assembly.

Chairman of the Commission, Emmanuel Kouhota, said such penalty is a poor reflection on leaders who show lack of response to fulfill their obligations under law.

He warns that the Commission will continue to penalize leaders who fail to comply with statutory requirements, which may include charging leaders concerned for misconduct.
Mr. Kouhota said consequences for lack of compliance are very serious for leaders who take their legal obligations lightly.
